Hello! This is my twenty-second year teaching at Nantucket High School. From a very young age, I wanted to become a teacher, and there was never a question in my mind about what I would teach. Reading has always been a passion of mine; I devour books. Reading is a way to enter into another world, and I still feel the thrill of that new world whenever I open a book. As a high school English teacher, it is my passion for reading and learning and the hope of sharing that passion which drives my teaching. Ultimately, it is that passion which I hope inspires my students.
My primary goal is to inspire students to become passionate learners who choose to lead literate lives long after they have graduated from high school. I expect my students to become independent learners capable of assessing their abilities, evaluating their understanding, and setting goals. I expect them to develop the ability to think deeply and critically about the texts they encounter, their life experiences, and the society in which they live. I expect them to become effective writers, capable of developing and clearly communicating ideas in multiple genres. I expect them to learn how to communicate effectively in small and large groups, capable of expressing themselves thoughtfully, as well as listening to others. Lastly, I expect my students to be honest and kind, both with themselves and with the classroom community.
I earned my bachelor's degree in English from Mount Holyoke College, where I gained a strong foundation in American literature and world literature as well as a broad base in history. I went on to earn my master's degree in English education from Teachers College, Columbia University, during which time I interned at Beacon High School, an alternative portfolio-based assessment school in Manhattan. At Teachers College, I studied philosophies of teaching as well as methods, giving me a strong foundation in both philosophy and practice. I spent three more years teaching middle school English in the New York City public school system before I came to Nantucket High School in 2003. In addition to teaching ELA, I am the Veritas adviser and the Nantucket Teachers Association President.
Living on Nantucket year round fulfills a life-long dream that stemmed from my summers in Wauwinet at my grandparents' cottage. I met my husband twenty-seven years ago while working as a waitress, and we are thrilled to be able to raise our daughter, Martha Page, on an island that we both love.
