Who goes to orientation?

Orientation is open to all incoming 9th graders. Additionally, the members of SLAM will be there, so you will get a chance to meet your mentor! The SLAM faculty advisors and administrators will also be onsite.

Who is my mentor?

You will meet a very important person at orientation - your mentor. This older student will be there for you throughout the school year to help you navigate your first year of high school. They will hang out with you during orientation so you get a chance to know each other and will also be leading your tour and group activities.

What should I wear to orientation?

Wear clothes that you are comfortable in and are school appropriate. (Save the bathing suits for the beach!) You will be walking around, sitting on the floor, and participating in some ice breakers, so this is probably not the best time to wear high heels.

I've already been inside the high school; do I really need a tour of the school?

You may be familiar with the performing arts center, the gym, the media center, and the cafeteria... but you can find out so much more! Find out where the nurse's office is, where to turn in athletic forms, how the cafeteria lunch lines work, and the location of each of your classes, just to give a few examples.

I will be out of town; is there another orientation?

Unfortunately, we only hold one orientation, but you will be able to meet your mentor within the first week of school. Additionally, your mentor will reach out to you (via your school email) before the first day so you can ask any questions that you may have ahead of time.

Will I get to hang out with my friends at orientation?

While catching up with friends is a great part of orientation, you will also be placed into groups for part of the day based on your power block (HR on your schedule). You will get a chance to socialize and relax, but parts of the program are structured and we want you to get to know new people, too!

I have practice on the day of orientation; what should I do?

The coaches are very supportive of the orientation program and have always allowed freshmen to attend the activities during the day. You should be able to attend practice (even double sessions!) and go to orientation, too. Please speak with your coach in advance of orientation about the conflict.

Are parents/guardians/siblings invited to orientation?

While we would love to meet your parents (or siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, dogs, etc.) at drop off or pick up, the orientation is designed for the incoming 9th graders only.

Who is my faculty advisor?

In addition to having a student mentor, each ninth grade student has a faculty advisor whom you will meet on the first day of school. Your faculty advisor will be working with you on your transition from middle school to high school, focusing on your academic success and involvement with the student body.

What should I do if I still have questions?

You may use this form if you have a specific question that is not answered here.
