Kindergarten Music Objectives
1. Beat-Be able to find and maintain a steady beat when listening to music or reciting a chant
2. Rhythm-Be able to identify and perform the rhythm of a song and know how it is different from the "beat". Be able to play and maintain a simple repeating rhythmic ostinato.
3. Melody- Be able to listen to and identify when the sounds of a melody are moving up and down. Identify sounds as higher or lower or the same as a previous given sound.
4. Tempo- Be able to identify when music is either fast or slow.
5. Dynamics- Be able to hear and identify the difference between loud (forte) and soft (piano) music.
6. Form- Be able to listen and identify "same" and "different" in melodic material Recognize and respond to music in the ABA and AB forms.
7. Singing Voice- Work toward the ability to sing with a light, clear, and free tone quality. Match a given pitch, or set of pitches singing alone (solo) and with others (ensemble). Sing melodies with instruments (accompanied) and without instruments (accapella).
8. Playing Instruments- Explore and play a wide variety of percussion instruments. Learn basic xylophone playing techniques. Use the xylophone to play simple repeated patterns to accompany songs and rhythmic movement activities.
9. Building Repertoire- Learn to sing a variety of songs. Sing songs in major and minor keys, songs in duple and triple meters, and sing songs from our culture and songs in foreign languages from other cultures.
10. Moving to Music- Physically respond to a beat or rhythm in music with a wide variety of movements and actions like clapping, walking, running,skipping, marching, etc.. Physically respond with movement to musical form, high and low, same and different, fast and slow, and up and down melodic direction.
11. Listening Skills- Learn and practice appropriate audience listening skills for the style of music performed. Listen to music performed by other students and professional musicians in an appropriate and respectful manner.
12. Analyze Music- Listen for and respond to emotional aspects of music (does the music feel happy, sad, silly, scary, etc..)
