We are currently studying unit 4 involving surface area and volume of various geometric solids.
January 24
We have almost completed unit 4, and are approaching a unit test on Tuesday, January 31st.
Major topics studied in this unit were the surface area and volumes of the 3 geometric solids; rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and cylinders.
To prepare for the test students should refer to their copies of the extra practice booklets for surface area and volume. All student have copies. For your reference, see the worked solutions for each below.
January 5
Today we will continue with surface area with a focus on triangular prisms.
See worksheet below - triangular prisms.
January 4
Today we were introduced to finding the surface area of geometric solids with a focus on rectangular prisms.
Our approach for determining the area involved:
Sketching the net of the rectangular prism
Identifying and labelling sides of the net with identical dimensions (ie....A, B, C)
Using the labels to devise a formula to calculate the surface area.
Determinine the area for each unique region
Finally use the individual areas in the surface area formula to find total surface area.
We completed the worksheet below on surface area of rectangular prisms.
January 3
To date we have been introduced to various geometric solids. In doing so we have:
focused on distinguishing between prisms and pyramids, and naming each solid.
Created and identified the solids from their nets.
Sketched nets of each type of solid.
