The Puente Project is an academic preparation program sponsored by the University of California that for more than 30 years has improved the college-going rate of tens of thousands of California's educationally disadvantaged students. Its mission is to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged students who:
Enroll in four-year colleges and universities
Earn college degrees
Return to the community as mentors and leaders of future generations

Structure of the Program
-->Mandadory: Students are enrolled in regular English 1 (Puente) and English 2 (Puente) in their 9th and 10th grade year with the same English teacher.
--> Students are enrolled in World Studies (10th Grade) and US History (11th Grade) with the same History teacher (Unless student decides to take Advanced Placement (AP).
--> Students attend college visits in the fall and spring:
9th grade Student Leadership Conference with other Puentistas from different high schools
9th grade college field trip with JLHS Puentistas
10th grade college field trip with JLHS Puentistas - Fall and spring
11th grade Southern CA college field trip - October of junior year (fundraising begins sophomore year)
