A few Dos and Don'ts!

*DO point out YOUR mistakes so he/she can see that mistakes aren't the end of the world.

*DO attach YET to the end of negative self-talk statements that he/she might make (i.e. "I can't do this" becomes "I can't do this YET").

*DO praise EFFORT, not the result.

*DO encourage creativity--doing things for the enjoyment of it and not necessarily for an end result.

*DO play games that don't focus on winning/losing, but teamwork, sportsmanship, and FUN!

*DO encourage him/her to color outside of the lines (literally!). MODEL it. Discuss and see how it feels for him/her.

*DO check your own behavior. Are you modeling what you want to see in your child?

*Don't always correct his/her mistakes. Allow him/her to MAKE mistakes so he/she doesn't feel the need to be perfect.

*Don't compare him/her to other children!
