Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What time does school start/end?
The children may come into the classroom at 7:15am. Morning Announcements come on at 7:40 and the tardy bell rings at 7:45. School dismissal is at 2:30.
What do I do if we are tardy?
It is a mandatory school rule that you come into the office and sign your child in if they are tardy. Your child must have a tardy slip from the office to be admitted to class. Please do your best to be on time each day. Our instruction begins promptly at 7:50. Thank you!
What do I do if I have a transportation change?
Please send a note in your child's daily folder if there are ANY transportation changes. Do NOT leave any transportation changes on my voice mail as I may not get them in time. If you have a last minute change, you can call the office before 1:30pm. They will call the room at the end of the day with any changes that were called into the office.
Can I come to eat lunch with my child?
YES! YES! YES! The kids love it when a parent or other family member joins them for lunch. Please sign in at the office, get your visitor sticker and then wait for our class outside the cafeteria. Our lunch time is 11:40.
Do I need to send a note when my child is absent?
Yes. You need to send a note within 3 days that is dated, signed by a parent or guardian, and that gives an explanation of the absence. If no note is written, the absence is coded as unexcused.
How will I know about my child's daily conduct?
Please check your child's planner each day. Your child will either have a sticker or a note from the teacher that will keep you informed daily of your child's behavior. A sticker/stamp lets you know that your child had a great day. A note will explain any issues that happened throughout the day.
What are interim reports?
Interim reports are progress reports that are sent home during the 4th week of a 9 week grading cycle. Interim reports will include both the number and letter grade so that you can find out exactly how your student it doing! I believe in frequent communication so this should never be a surprise! Please check your child's HERO binder each Monday to see all graded work!
Can I send a snack to school for my child?
Yes. We have a snack/social break each day. Please send a small, healthy snack to school for your child.
Can my child have a water bottle at school?
Yes. If you would like you may send a small bottle with a spill proof cap for your child to keep at their desk.
What are Barker Bucks?
Barker Bucks are cards that are given when students are "caught doing good". The student may be helping another in need, picking up trash, or letting someone borrow a pencil. The students deposit their Barker Bucks into their bank account and buy privileges in the classroom!
What are privilege cards?
Privilege cards are given to students when they save enough money. Included are a 15 minutes free time on the computer, bringing a small stuffed animal for the day, read a story to the class, lunch with the teacher, sit at teacher desk, etc. The students work hard for these privileges!
How can I keep up with current events in the classroom?
A newsletter is sent home and emailed each Monday informing you of all our weekly events. This contains what we're doing in class, dates to remember, friendly reminders, and any extra information needed for the week. Please check the website frequently. You may also sign up for text updates in our Dojo app.
What are the grading policies in 3rd grade?
Letter grades are new to most third graders, and can be intimidating at first. The third grade team will be grading assignments as a percentage out of 100. We use the 10 point grading scale:
100-90 A (exceptional)
89-80 B (above average)
79-70 C (average)
69-60 D (below average)
59 or below (failing)
All graded word will be sent home on Wednesdays in a stapled paper packet. Please review the work carefully with your child.
