My title is Gifted Education Specialist, often referred to as AIG teacher, but better known as Ms. Kelly. This year at Snipes, I will offer accelerated and/or enriched instruction to students in grades 3-5 who are recommended to me by their classroom teachers or have been selected based on data to reach the top 10% academic performers in our school's population. I teach small groups of reading and math where I focus on higher order thinking skills using advanced materials and resources adopted by our county AIG program. I also work with K-2 as a resource and offer nurturing lessons. I provide analogy lessons early in the school year for 3rd grade in preparation for the cogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test).
Daily Responsibilities (includes but not limited to): Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and regulations established by New Hanover County AIG (Academically/Intellectually Gifted) program; Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks; Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments in order to evaluate students' progress; Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic concerns; Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations; Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students; Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities; Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests; Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures to maintain a positive learning environment; Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, and social development.
Qualifications: Master of Arts in Teaching, The University of North Carolina Wilmington. NC Teacher’s License Grades K-12 in Gifted Education, Reading and ESL.
What I like most about the job is interacting and relating with students, which starts with finding out their interests and learning styles. I enjoy small groups, working on challenging math problems and book talks. The best lessons are full of student participation. My goal is to engage and challenge students and hopefully transmit my love of learning.
