Definition:

MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Support, the name given to the graduated process used to support student learning. This process is also referred to as an RTI Method, or Response to Intervention Method. These descriptors mean that data are used to design interventions and determine their effectiveness for each student.

Overview of the Process:

- includes instruction according to the standard curriculum

- regular and ongoing reviews monitor student progress

Tier II

- students who need additional support may receive Tier II interventions

- a planning meeting occurs between a classroom teacher and parent

- an intervention plan is designed and implemented within the classroom

- periodic reviews evaluate student progress

Tier III

- students who need more intensive support may receive Tier III interventions

- additional assessment occurs and comparison to district norms

- a planning meeting occurs with the MTSS Team and parent(s)

- an intervention plan is implemented and progress monitored by a specialist

- periodic reviews evaluate student progress

- MTSS Team may consider a formal evaluation for eligibility for special education support based on progress
