What do we use to measure your child's reading ability? We use the benchmark assessment Amplify DIBELS. This gives us information on your child's ability to decode phonetically, determine unknown vocabulary, fluency/accuracy rate, and comprehension of text. It also assigns your child a Lexile Level. Click here to find out more about Lexile levels.
What is the Lexile range for my third grader? Students should be reading in their "sweet spot" as explained in the link above. Below is a chart to show where a typical 3rd grader should be reading at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. If you are unsure of your child's Lexile level, please contact me, and I'll be happy to give that information to you. It can also be found on his/her DIBELS Reading Score Report that is sent home after beginning, middle, and end of year testing is completed.
Students must reach a 725 Lexile level by the end of third grade to be considered "proficient".
How can I find books that are on my child's level or that can challenge them? This link takes you to a search engine that can locate books based on grade, Lexile level, and interest.
Where can I find a list of appropriate books for third graders? Below are some great resources for finding great books for third graders! Make sure to take into account what Lexile range they should be reading within in order to give them the challenge they need to conquer texts that are considered within 3rd grade complexity.

What can I do to practice reading comprehension with my child? NC DPI has a list of question stems for each of the ELA reading standards. Visit this document, and you'll find the third grade question stems on pages 28-37. When reading with your child, adapt the question stems to fit the text you are working on.
