Course Description:
Welcome to APES!!! This is an interesting and challenging course that is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory Environmental Science Course, usually taken by Environmental Science majors during their first year. The main goals of APES are provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. This class aims to provide students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing science of the Environment. It will be extensively based on independent work, lecture/discussion, student presentations and debates, and a series of in-depth lab investigations and several field studies. A minimum of one period per week will be spent on lab or field work. The content of the course is easily understandable, but the solutions to problems are complex and ever-changing. That is the reason why Environmental Science is such an exciting topic…there is always something new to learn!
