What Your Child Will Learn This Year:
English/Language Arts:
Reading
· Identify and write all upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet, ID sounds.
· Concepts of Print: parts of a book (title, front cover, spine and back cover), distinguish between letters, words and sentences, first and last words on a page, point to the words while they read.
· Identify rhyming words.
· Identify the beginning, middle and ending sounds of words.
· Identify and state the meaning of periods, question marks, exclamation marks and quotation marks.
· Read a Level D book.
· Utilize reading strategies on our own in order to decode unknown words.
● Retell stories read or heard including specific details.
● Identify characters, setting, problems and solutions in books read or heard.
· Read, write and spell the 42 kindergarten core words (including the first and last name).
● Identify long and short vowels. Read words with these vowel sounds.
Writing
· Draw detailed pictures.
o There must be a main idea, ground, sky and other details to help tell teh story or convey the message
o People must be drawn with all of their parts (head, body, legs, feet/shoes, arms, fingers, clothing, hair, eyes, nose, mouth and ears)
o People and objects should be in the correct places (people or buildings should be drawn on the ground e.g.)
· Write 3 or more complete sentences.
o First letter must be capitalized.
o Core words must be spelled correctly.
o There must be spaces between words.
o Other words must be sounded out phonetically with dominate sounds present. ("flwrs" might be the word "flowers", for example)
o There must be a punctuation mark at the end of the sentence.
o The sentence must make sense and match the drawing.
o The sentence must be written from left to right and top to bottom.
Math:
Counting and Cardinality
· Count to 100 by ones and tens.
· Write numbers 0-20.
· Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20.
· Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted.
· Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in line, circle, rectangular array or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration.
· Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than or equal to the number of objects in another group.
● Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
· Understand that adding is putting things together and subtracting is taking apart or taking from.
· Be able to use manipulatives to represent and solve addition or subtraction.
Measurement and Data
· Describe objects using appropriate vocabulary (color, weight, height, width, length and texture)
· Compare two objects using appropriate vocabulary.
· Recognize concepts of calendar time using appropriate vocabulary (state the days of the week, months of the year and seasons)
Geometry
· Identify and describe shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, cube, cone, cylinder and sphere)
· Draw and/or create shapes.
· Compose shapes to form bigger shape. (Using two triangles to make a rectangle)
· Compare geometric shapes in different sizes using informal language to describe similarities and differences, parts (sides and vertices) and attributes(curved or straight lines)
· Model and use directional and positional vocabulary (including behind, over, right, etc)
Algebra
· Sort and classify objects by one attribute, such as color, shape and/or size. Explain how you sorted the objects.
· Create and extend patterns with actions, words and objects.
