Welcome to 2nd grade! I am so excited for you to be a part of our class! We will be doing so many fun things this year and I can’t wait to get started! Here are some important things for you to know about school. If you have any further questions you can always reach me by email katelynn.ashley@nhcs.net. I will respond as quickly as possible.

Arrival/Dismissal: Our mornings are very important. We start instruction as soon as the tardy bell rings. Your child is considered tardy if they are not in the classroom by 7:40am. Children are allowed in the classroom at 7:10. If your child is coming to school in a car, proceed through the car traffic circle. Everyone will receive a tag to hang in their cars so staff can call for them during dismissal. Please have this hanging on your mirror before arriving at the car rider line. If you do not have the car tag from the school with your child's name, ID will need to be checked.
Afterschool daycare students will remain in the school until the daycare van is there to pick them up. Parents should contact their daycare to request a pickup on their specific days and times at Codington.
Please check here for bus routes, bus tracker, and other transportation information: https://www.nhcs.net/divisions/operations/transportation If your child is riding home on the bus, a parent or an adult aged family member must be at the bus stop for your child to be dropped off. Please read all the information carefully on the transportation site listed above.
Transportation changes: If your child is going home a different way than usual, please put a note in your child's folder, email me, or contact the office. There may not be much time during our day for me to check emails, so if you email me and did not send a note on the day transportation is changing, please make sure to contact the office if you have not gotten confirmation back from me.
Communication Folder: Each student will be bringing home a purple folder which will be used to help facilitate communication between school and home. This folder needs to be checked daily. Please take the time to admire your child’s work that will be sent home sometimes and praise your child’s effort. Your interest and help in their education is an extremely important motivator. Items that you need to send to school (notes, lunch money, etc.) should be placed in this folder. Folders are checked each morning. If you are sending money, please put it in an envelope or Ziploc bag with your child’s name labeled on the outside.
Parent Volunteers: We love volunteers and your support! To volunteer, you must complete volunteer training. I will get a schedule prepared and will start volunteers in the classroom towards the middle/end of 1st quarter.

To officially become a level 1 NHCS volunteer, you must complete the following steps which are all on our All Hands On Deck Page.
1. View the volunteer orientation presentation.
2. Read the volunteer handbook.
3. Complete the volunteer orientation assessment with a score of 80% or higher.
4. Follow the steps at the end of the training to submit the volunteer application form
5. Complete a background check application ($22.50-valid for 3 years)

Snack: Snack time will be offered to your child every day. I encourage you to send in a healthy snack; crackers, fruit, cereal, pretzels, raw veggies, etc. This will reinforce our attempts to teach your child healthy eating habits. SNACKS NEED TO BE CLEARLY LABELED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME OR PUT IN A SPECIAL SPOT. (This helps your child know that they have a snack, and which item is for snack, so they won't eat part of their lunch or think they don't have one.)
Birthdays: I love birthdays and enjoy making students feel special on their day. Here are some helpful tips to ensure a fun and easy time to celebrate for all. You are welcome to send in store bought treats if you like. We will have 19 students in our class.
It is sometimes hard for children to deal with choices, so sending in the same (cupcakes, donuts, cookies…) makes life happier for all. Please make certain that treats are peanut free. Birthday invitations may not be distributed from school unless the entire class is invited. It is against school policy and it creates very unhappy little ones when they realize they’re not included. I am happy to provide you with the email addresses of students whose parents give release permission. Thank you for helping us keep everyone included!
Water Bottle: Please send a water bottle (labeled with first and last name) to school with your child daily. They will be able to refill them and have them at their desk throughout the day.
Grocery Store Reward Cards: Did you know you can link your grocery reward cards to Codington, and the stores will send money to our school at no cost to you? Just click the links below to link your store card to our school, and they do the rest for you!

Box Tops for Education: Box Tops are so much easier than they used to be! You no longer need to clip and trim them before your child can bring them to school. You can click this link https://www.boxtops4education.com/ to download the Box Tops app. Once you have it, you just scan your receipt after checkout, and Box Tops does all the work for you. scan your receipts. This is an easy and great way to help support our school.

Classroom Management: We use a very positive proactive approach to our classroom behavior management that fosters individual and social responsibility. We support each student with becoming aware of their own actions, feelings, and behaviors. Our school will be implementing The Zones of Regulation and Codington CARE.
