¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español! Welcome to 8th grade Spanish I! Please note that this is your high school Spanish I class, so this is an academic class (with homework for practice and tests for assessing your skills) required for college entrance. If you are successful this year in Spanish 1, then you will begin high school at Spanish 2, and will be able to take AP Spanish for college credit in high school. This semester we will continue our skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish as we learn about the countries where Spanish is spoken and how to communicate with speakers of Spanish. We have already covered much of the vocabulary in previous classes, and now we have a lot of grammar concepts to learn to form original sentences in Spanish for real communication.
Materials needed for class:
spiral notebook
two-pocket folder (to keep handouts and graded work)
pens/pencils
earbuds optional
Topics we will learn to talk about this semester:
I. Unit 0 - Review - greetings, numbers, calendar, Spanish speaking countries
2. Unit 1 - My friends and I (our interests and activities)
3. Unit 2 - My life at school (describing my school day, things we do at school, things we have to do, conjugating verbs)
4. Unit 3 - My life outside of school (our activities, places we go, making plans, eating in a restaurant, more verb conjugations, stem changing verbs)
5. Unit 4 - My family (family members, house, chores, family responsibilities, comparative and superlative descriptions)
Grading Scale How am I graded in Spanish class?
Remember we are on a journey to communicate and connect with real people who speak real Spanish. For this reason, I will grade you based on your proficiency in communicating in the language. We will assess/grade our performance based on proficiency levels that tell us what we CAN do with the language. Final grade is calculated as Q3x40% + Q4x40% + FinalExamx20%.
1. Summative assessments (Proficiency checks / Tests / Projects) – 50%
2. Formative assessments (Quizzes / Proficiency practice) – 30%
3. Classwork / Homework – 20%
