Do you have an interest in going to four-year college? Would you benefit from a class that provides support in the form of tutoring twice a week, time management skills, organization and goal setting? Would you like to visit college campuses and have help applying to college and for scholarships? The Hoggard STAE program may be for you! Please make sure you have a GPA of 2.5 or above.
STAE, Striving to Achieve Excellence, aims to serve students with the potential and motivation to attend college. Students can be under-represented on college campuses, middle of the road and above. Many of our students are from low-income backgrounds and will be the first generation in their family to attend college but that is not a necessity. Our program helps to make our students future and college ready through rigorous classes, oppurtunity knowledge, and student agency.
The STAE class provides students with academic support, social support, career support, college support, and leadership development. Students take honors and AP courses, engage in collaborative tutoring groups, participate in enrichment and motivational activities, visit colleges in North Carolina, and attend forums with guest speakers from the community.
The class and related activities are designed to encourage success in a rigorous high school curriculum, to make participants realize college education is possible, to educate them on college options, majors and careers, and to prepare and equip them for the college admissions process.
STAE classes are electives and most times combined with a core course. Classes are limited to no more than 25 students. 2 days each week, professional tutors work with students on challenging courses. Students must maintain the required grades and meet conduct expectations to be eligible for the STAE program. This program is geared towards those students who have the drive to be successful but just need extra support.
Interested students should apply. Interviews are conducted in late spring and selected students are notified by email.

Look what we are doing in STAE:
Our Junior and Senior classes went to the Greenville Museum of art where they created an art collage. We then went to tour East Carolina University where we had lunch in the dining hall as well as a campus tour,
STAE was at it again with the amazing help of Mrs. Bierstedt! We ran Aid Station 5 for the Ironman and not only did these kids work so very hard they had fun doing it. We earn grant money when we do this that helps support our program.
The seniors are currently reading The Secret Life of Bees and of course we needed to learn al about real bees. Susan Swarick cam in with some of her bees to give us all the information on how bee colonies work. Everyone enjoyed learning about the Secret Life of the Bees!
The entire STAE program went bowling after one of our teacher made exams. We enjoyed playing games, eating pizza and each other. It was so much fun!
2020: The STAE Sophomores paired up with The National Honor society to beautify some of Hoggard's outdoor spaces. They created an outdoor classroom seen here as well as painted all wooden structures outdoors. They also weeded and mulched these areas to make them more inviting for the students. Thank you to Coastal Ground Solutions and Mrs. Robbins for helping with this project. The grounds look amazing!
2022: The STAE classes manned their annual aid station at the Wilmington Ironman. Our station was all about blue and we had a great time cheering on the runners and helping our community in the process. We earn money to put toward the STAE program while we help this great organization.
2021: The STAE program joined forces with National Honor Society students to man an aid station at the Wilmington Ironman. This is a fundraiser that helps the STAE program here at Hoggard. Our theme was 90's and we had an amazing day!
Freshman and Sophomore STAE classes spend the morning beautifying our campus for Homecoming! 10/6/21
Junior and Senior STAE classes headed to UNCG and A&T for campus tours. They also ate lunch in the dining hall to get the full experience. 10/7/21 This trip was made possible by funds provided from The Landfall Foundation
We could not run this program without our amazing sponsors!
