Snapshot of the Law:
When your child reaches 3, 6, 10 unexcused absences you will receive a letter.
The Law Requires that we notify the parents/guardian, with hopes of the attendance getting better. Once you receive the letter stating that your child reached 10 or more days, I will contact you to schedule a parent conference with the attendance council we have here at Rachel Freeman to see how we can help you and your student to improve their attendance. This will hopefully eliminate the possibility of attending the Judicial Attendance Council and or contacting Department of Social Services.
Unexcused absences
Daily notifications via Alert Now
3 Days -Parent notified of excessive absences
6 Days - Parent notified of excessive absences via mail. Conference held; Referral to School Social Worker;Interventions put in place
10 Days Accumulated Unexcused Absences - Parent notified by US Mail; Mandatory meeting before the Judicial Attendance Council
Failure to attend this meeting may result in criminal sanctions or charges of violations of the Compulsory Attendance Law;however, if the parent, guardian or custodian has not made a good faith
effort to comply with the Law, the District Attorney and Department of Social Services shall be notified.
Penalty for Law Violation:
Any parent, guardian, or other person violating the provisions of the Compulsory Attendance Law is guilty of a Class 1 Misdemeanor. (G.S.115C-380)
Unexcused Absences:
Missing the bus Babysitting, etc.
Oversleeping Inclement Weather
Excused Absences:
Satisfactory evidence of (provide documentation to the teacher upon student's return to school)
Illness or injury
Quarantine
Death in immediate family
Medical or dental appointment
Court or Administrative proceedings
Religious observance
Local School Board policy
Educational opportunity...(Prior approval granted by principal)
Absence related to deployment activities
Arriving Late or Early Dismissal
Elementary students must be accompanied by parent/guardian inside the school
Excessive tardiness/early dismissals reported to the School Social Worker
Continued non-compliance may result in notification to:
Department of Social Services
Juvenile Court
District Attorney
