Coaching Certifications

Please follow the links below to complete the necessary Coaching Certificates in order to obtain a Pupil Activity Permit:

  • Ohio Department of Education: You need to go to the ODE website and login. If you do not have an account, you will need to sign up for one. After you have logged in to your account, apply for a Coaching (Pupil Activity) Permit. If you hold a current teaching certificate, you can apply for a 5-year Pupil Activity Permit. Otherwise, apply for a 3-year permit. There are two New Riegel codes to choose. Please select the code that has 049718. This permit is not reimbursed by the New Riegel Schools

  • FBI/BCI Check: All candidates seeking their first Ohio educator license, certificate or permit must submit both Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and FBI criminal background checks. Additionally, everyone who holds a credential issued by the Ohio Department of Education must complete FBI background checks every five years. Please note that credential holders are responsible for obtaining required updated background checks within the five year time frame prescribed by law, even if the expiration date of a background check does not coincide with the expiration date of the Department-issued credential. Fingerprinting can be done locally at Hopewell-Loudon High School or the Educational Service Center in Tiffin (you may want to call for an appointment).

    • Please do not do your background check until you've applied for a pupil activity permit.

    • Results must be sent to the Ohio Department of Education.

  • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Class: Sign up for an NFHSlearn account on this page. After you have logged in, click on "Courses" at the top of the page and scroll down to "Fundamentals of Coaching". New Riegel Local Schools reimburses coaches for the $75 cost of this class (please turn in your receipt to the Athletic Director). This class only needs to be taken one time.

  • NFHS Concussion in Sports: This course is also under your NFHSlearn account. Go through the same process as the Fundamentals of Coaching class but click on "Concussion in Sports" instead. This is a free class that has to be taken every three years.

  • First Aid/Sports Medicine: This link takes you to a course available under your NFHSlearn account. There are also classes available locally that you can attend in person. However, please do not attend a class that is over $50. The online class costs $45 and has to be taken every time your Pupil Activity Permit is up for renewal. New Riegel Local Schools reimburses coaches for the cost of this class (please turn in your receipt to the Athletic Director).

  • CPR/AED Training: This link takes you to the Red Cross website (there are also courses offered locally that you can attend). Click on "Adult CPR/AED Online". The cost of this course is $25 and is reimbursed by New Riegel Local Schools (please turn in your receipt to the Athletic Director). Please ask the Athletic Director if there are any Red Cross online coupon codes available before taking the class. CPR/AED training needs to be renewed every two years.

  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest (Lindsay's Law): First of all, the ODE now accepts the NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest Course (just go to the NFHS website and search "Sudden Cardiac Arrest). This link will take you to the ODE website. You will want to log on to your ODE account and click on Ohio ID Portal. Then click on "Sites and Applications", "Learning Management System", then "Launch". Then find the sudden cardiac arrest course Learning Management Systems. Click on "Course Catalog" on the upper-right corner. Then choose Coaches Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training: Curriculum and Assessment. Please print out the certificate of completion and email to athletic director. For anyone applying for or renewing a pupil activity permit, this cannot be completed until the superintendent has signed off on your pupil activity permit.
