Rancho San Felipe

The Rancho San Felipe Project ( Rancho San Felipe )

by Sarah Duque and Scott T. Barnes. A Story of California 100 Years Ago,

fourth-grade reader, illustrated novel, 2013.

A tale of adventure and an unlikely friendship on one of California's last ranchos. In fourth grade California students study the state's history including the missions and ranchos. However, few tales from this period have been written down. Rancho San Felipe is a true story of a 1905 adventure told by the daughter of the hero. Woman-of-the-year winner Sarah Duque's delightful full-color illustrations make this true story equally appropriate as a fourth-grade reader and a read-aloud book. Includes a map, vocabulary, and brands used to identify cattle. Forty pages.

Scott T. Barnes was thrilled to coauthor Rancho San Felipe, a Story of California One Hundred Years Ago with author/illustrator Sarah Duque. Rancho San Felipe tells the true story of a young boy’s first summer working on his father’s rancho in 1905.

An accomplished artist, illustrator Sarah Duque has done one-woman shows of her artwork in such far-flung places as the Philippines, Australia, and Italy. Two volumes of Sarah’s artwork, Accade Una Volta, have been published in Florence, Italy, now in their third edition.

Also enjoyed as a read-aloud book for younger children, Rancho San Felipe is used in Southern California schools to enrich the study of the Missions and Ranchos.
