"Snap-Apple Night" (1833)
This is a painting by Irish artist Daniel Maclise (ca. 1806-1870) titled "Snap-Apple Night" (1833), allegedly inspired by a Halloween party he attended in Blarney, County Cork, Ireland, in 1832. According to musician and author Grey Larson, this is "the earliest known visual portrayal of the use of the flute in traditional Irish music" (The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle, Mel Bay Publications, 2003, p. 57). On the right is a group of musicians playing together, including a fiddler, a flute player (partly hidden by the fiddler), and an uilleann piper.
