Petty Officer Third Class - Written Leadership Essay on the following :

  • What is the leadership role of a PO3 in the NJROTC Unit?

  • If there are a limited number of PO3's that could be chosen to lead, why should you be one of them?

  • Why is it important for petty officers to set the example (in every respect) for all cadets, and not just the unit's officers?

  • Explain the phrase "Esprit de Corps" and how it relates to a conviction to the NJROTC Unit.

  • Why is it important for cadets in leadership positions to explicitly practice naval customs and courtesies even more so than their followers?

  • Pick your weakest leadership trait, analyze its importance and how it would improve you and your followers if you practiced it.

  • What is the purpose behind adhering to an unwritten code of ethics/conduct at all times, not just in uniform? (What is the purpose behind being a 24/7 cadet?)

Petty Officer Second Class - Written Test (color guard procedures)

Petty Officer First Class - Written Test (company drill)

Chief Petty Officer - An Evaluation Through Chief Board (contact senior chief) over :

  1. A written test over all above criteria

  2. A detailed examination on uniform regulations, including the proper placement of insignia, devices, ribbons, etc.

  3. Demonstration of the Manual of Arms for the sword

  4. Leading a platoon in Close Order Drill

  5. Minimum of 10 hours community service

  6. A written essay over the following topics :

  • Pick your weakest leadership trait, analyze its importance and how it would improve you and your followers if you practiced it.

  • Why is it important for a chief to practice naval customs and courtesies even more diligently than their followers?

  • If there was only one chief that we could advance, why should it be you?

  • Analyze the phrase "Lead from the front" and explain how this would relate to your role as chief.

  • What is the difference between a good leader and a great leader, what can you do to become a great leader?

  • What are the things that set a great chief apart from an average chief in the eyes of the staff officers?

  • What are the effects of poor senior enlisted leadership upon the NJROTC unit?

Essay Requirements

You will write a well-constructed essay using Standard English that features all of the conventions of formal writing including a well thought out introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Any essay off-topic, plagiarized, not written to the standards, or turned in past due date without written prior approval from the CO or NSI/SNSI will not be scored and no advancement will be awarded.


Standards:

  • Essay will be in complete APA format with a title page, running head, and reference page

  • Essay must be 12 font, double sided

  • Acceptable fonts are Times New Roman and Teletype

  • All margins must be 1 inch

  • Essay must be 4 pages in content length (full pages, cover page not included)

  • Essay must include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion

  • If outside material or quotes are used in the essay, a reference page and APA in-text citations are required (standards for this can be found on GHS website in English Dept. links)

  • Essay will be due no later than 4 weeks after assigned

  • Essay will be scored based off of content, conventions (grammar), and overall impression


Final Note:

The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate attention to detail, conceptual leadership skills, and overall conviction to the program. The best way to advance is to go above and beyond what is expected in your writing
