Things to work on at home

Even though the school year is just beginning, there are some things you can do now to help your child get off to a great start:

  • Take time to read to your child each day, even just for a few minutes.
  • If your child doesn't have a library card, go to the library to get one.
  • When you read aloud with your child, discuss the illustrations. Ask your child to tell you what is happening and predict what will happen next.
  • Each day, ask your child to tell you one thing he or she has learned. Some helpful conversation starters are, "What activity did you choose during playtime today?" or "What was your favorite thing you did today?"

If you have any questions or want more ideas about how to help your child with beginning reading skills, please contact me at the school. I'll be happy to talk with you!
