2024 NYSSMA Dates: Friday, April 12th & Saturday, April 13th

Monroe-Woodbury Middle School

What is NYSSMA?

NYSSMA stands for New York State School Music Association. This organization sponsors a solo festival each spring. It is not a competition, nor does it involve a large audience. Students prepare a solo, scales and are asked to sight read (play a line of music they have never seen before.) They perform for a state certified judge who scores the performance and leaves comments for improvement and encouragement.

Should my child participate?

NYSSMA is not required but many students who practice a minimum of 100 minutes participate enjoy the extra challenge. Solos are chosen by the teacher and prepared in lessons and should be added to their practice routine at home. There are six levels, with level I being the easiest and level VI the most difficult, professional level. 4th grade participants play a level 1 solo while most 5th grade participants play a level 2 solo. The adjudication lasts 10 minutes, after which the students may leave. NYSSMA always occurs over a Friday night through Saturday afternoon and the dates are marked in the district calendar.

What books do I need to purchase for my child to participate in NYSSMA??

Please purchase the book your child needs as soon as possible. The sooner they have it, the sooner they can begin adding their own markings to the music. It is encouraged that they write in these books!! Write your child's name on the book before it comes into school! You can purchase these books at any local music store or online. Amazon sells them but they are sometimes cheaper when you go through an online music company such as Sharmusic.com. Links to options are below.

**Mrs. Hotto will be in contact with you and your child about the specific book you need to purchase in February if you have chosen to participate. If you are unsure what you need, please email Mrs. Hotto directly at ahotto@mw.k12.ny.us

**Please Note** Suzuki Books can be purchased with a CD to accompany your child and help him/her practice with more accuracy. This is by no means required but some students like having that option to use as another practice tool.
