What is the personal project?
The personal project is a culminating assignment designed as a formal expression and celebration of what has been learnt throughout the five years of
the Middle Years Programme (MYP). It “encourages students to practise and strengthen their approaches to learning (ATL) skills, to consolidate prior and subject-specific learning, and to develop an area of personal interest.”
Furthermore, the meaningful connection to a global context within the project will lead students to develop an area of personal interest beyond the classroom, share their new understanding and recognise the impact of their learning on their own actions. The development of the personal project within a global context is fundamental within the personal project process. The personal project must be completed by all students in the final year of the MYP.
The personal project is a major undertaking, requiring students to select a topic based on their passions and personal interests. “The personal project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product/outcome and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP. Students must be able to define a clear goal, understand the means to achieve that goal, and be able to reflect deeply and meaningfully on what they have done. Students must achieve at least an overall level of 3 (see Appendix B) on their personal project in order to remain eligible for acquiring their MYP certificate.
As a bonus, the BC Ministry of Education awards credits towards graduation upon successful completion of the Personal Project!
