During a professional development day, I had the opportunity to build and test a car with a small group of professionals. We looked at the correlation between the weight and speed of our car and adjusted the weight to make it faster. This experience showed how engaging and connected you can make activities for your students. This type of activity had various deep cross-curricular connections.

In February I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a conference for student teachers in Nanaimo, BC that helped me grow as a professional. In the link provided there is a picture of an idea that was shared in one of the sessions I went to about getting students moving as much as possible during PE. The example shows a way of grouping students that can be random, by ability, or with their friends.
Jan. - Apr. 2016
Earlier in the semester I attended an ATA Specialist Council Carousel and Professional Growth Seminar. I also attended a session called, "Put Your Own Mask on First", that discussed strategies for teachers to use to ensure that they stay engaged in the classroom but can separate work and home life.
Growth:
As a future Albertan teacher it is likely that I will be an ATA member so I believe it is important to learn about what the ATA is and what resources they offer to teachers. I was able to join a number of specialist councils and learn more about assessment, classroom management and differentiated instruction. In the other session I was able to learn strategies to ensure positive mental health while teaching so that I can have a healthy home and work life.
Actions:
In the program outcomes it suggests that teachers, "guide their actions with a personal overall vision of the purpose of education [and ] communicate their vision, including how it has changed as a result of new knowledge, understanding and experience" (P8). Seminars like these ones will be important to participate in to build knowledge and keep up to date on new information and strategies. It is also a way to meet peers and discuss teaching strategies with them. I believe it is important to be a life-long learner and to keep learning and developing in this profession. I hope to have the opportunity to participate in more seminars like these ones in the future.
Sept. - Dec. 2015
I have learned in this semester about a number of different professional responsibilities. As a teacher I will have a responsibility to provide a safe, inclusive space for my students to learn and I will also have to make sure personal opinions or biases do not affect my judgement or teaching. I also will have a responsibility to the parents of my students that I am teaching appropriate material and ensuring that their children are physically and emotionally safe while they are in my classroom. As a teacher I will also have responsibilities under the school I teach in and also under the ATA as I will be bound by certain restrictions and a code of conduct.
