Education:
EDUC 1231 Professional Dimensions 1 - In this class I learned about different teaching philosophies and started to look into different areas that pertain to teaching like assessment, classroom management and being present in the classroom. I also got to apply what I was learning during my field experience, which was one day every week, in and elementary classroom.
EDUC 1233 Professional Dimensions 2 - This course prompted a lot of questions about funding, both allocating funds in school and whether the government should be funding private schools, UDL and the growth mindset versus the fixed mindset. I also got to spend my field days with a reading specialist so I got to learn a lot about reading strategies for ELL students and other students struggling with reading and comprehension.
EDUC 2321 Education and Individual Development - This course provided a wealth of information. Learning about morality, multiple intelligences, different theorists and diplomatic discourse have really opened my mind to the complexities of teaching. I have really enjoyed learning about the different stages of psychological, physical and moral development for children and I think knowing these stages will help me understand my students better and be a more effective teacher.
EDUC 2325 Current and Emerging Technology - In this course I explored multiple ways that technology can be utilized in a classroom setting. Through the assignments I learned about different educational apps, assessment tools, infographics and also learned more about Smartboard technology.
EDUC 2371 Language Development and Literacy - This course got down to the root of language and literacy. By learning more about the construction of language, I will be able to teach literacy in a more effective manner.
EDUC 2375 Effective Assessment - Measurement and Evaluation - In this course I learned about a wealth of sound assessment tools and strategies. This course was tied to my field experience so I got to put what I was learning about assessment into practice right away by planning lessons with a focus on formative and summative assessment.
EDUC 3010 Practicum 1 - In my third year practicum, I learned a great deal about classroom management, lesson planning and execution, inquiry learning, differentiation and assessment. Five weeks of being fully immersed and involved in school community taught me how to apply what I have learned in the classroom setting.
EDUC 3103 Teaching ELA - From running records to long-term lesson planning, this course helped me explore the ELA curriculum and find relevant and exciting ways to turn the outcomes into engaging lessons.
EDUC 3106 Teaching Science - In this course I became more familiar with the elementary science curriculum, creating engaging and integrated lessons, inquiry, project-based learning and assessment.
EDUC 3108 Teaching Mathematics - This course brought mathematics to life and I learned many ways to make math applicable, engaging and integrated with other subjects. In this course I discovered many connections between math and english, science and art.
EDUC 3351 Aboriginal Cultural Dimensions - In this course I explored Alberta's and Canada's history and misconceptions about Indigenous peoples. By hearing from Elder's active in local tribes I am able to better understand traditional ways of understanding and the multi-generational effect of residential schools.
EDUC 3361 Exceptional Students- Through this course I explored many strategies and models to differentiate and personalize learning for students. This course was directly linked with my final practicum where I was teaching and planning for a GATE class. As I learned more about exceptional needs, I could apply my learning directly into the classroom to support students better.
EDUC 3372 Early Literacy Teach English - This course explored different literacy programs for elementary classrooms. As well, I learned about different challenged early language learners may face and how to approach these challenges and scaffold appropriately.
EDUC 4030 Practicum 2- In my final 14 week practicum I independently planned and facilitated lessons and taught 50-75% for 9 weeks and 100% for 5 weeks. In this practicum I engaged in professional development through purposeful reflections and seminars.
EDUC 4101 Teaching Art - Teaching art explored the various forms art can take, how to appropriately assess art and how to purposefully and meaningfully integrate art with other disciplines. Through this course I learned many different ways to implement an effective art program in an elementary classroom.
EDUC 4104 Teaching Music - I explored the music curriculum for the first time in this course. As well as learning more about music specialists in elementary schools, I learned many ways music can enhance lessons in the elementary classroom. I also was able to gain practical experience through teaching a lesson in a music class while gaining feedback from a music specialist and a peer observer.
EDUC 4105 Teaching Physical Education - In learning more about the physical education curriculum, I was able to come to understand the value and importance of teaching physical literacy. In this course I learned many different ways to help students become more comfortable with their bodies and their environment.
EDUC 4107 Teaching Social Studies - In this course I got the chance to dig into the front matter of the social studies curriculum to really understand the values and goals of what social studies is all about. Through curriculum exploration to creating a deep inquiry lesson, this course has opened my eyes to the potential engagement and learning possible through the social studies curriculum.
EDUC 4201 Integrated Ideas, Values and Praxis- This course went alongside practicum and focused on working on our professional learning plans and designing and facilitating an inquiry project in our practicum placement. Through this course I further developed competency through design, facilitation, and understanding my values and passions as a professional.
Minor in Elementary Mathematics:
MATH 1102 Introduction to Geometry - In this course I learned different proofs, broadened my view in geometry by exploring different dimensions and learned practical applications for geometry.
MATH 1150 Mathematical Reasoning - In this course we looked a lot at logic, set theory and probability. It helped me to know how to organize, interpret and describe data.
MATH 1160 Higher Arithmetic - This course prompted me to explore important theory for the first time and how to describe and explain concepts clearly so that students can understand the material. We looked a lot into number theory, inductive and deductive methods and communication of ideas.
MATH 1205 The Beauty of Mathematics - This course stretched my understanding of mathematics and it's different applications in everyday life. There was a lot of group work in this course so I got very comfortable working with other people and presenting on different topics in front of the class.
MATH 3201 Visual Art and Mathematics - This course explored the many ways that mathematics can be integrated with visual arts at an elementary level. Through this course I gained a better understanding of both the math and art curriculum as well as a multitude of engaging lessons.
MATH 4201 Seminar - This course was very self-directed and I got to research different concepts and present them to the class. I also looked into elementary application of higher mathematics and researched and discussed how different things could be used effectively in an elementary classroom.
General Education:
ANTH 200 People & Bicultural Evolution - In this course we looked at different people and their cultures from around the world. We focussed on archaeology and physical anthropology.
GNED 1101 Scientific and Mathematical Literacy for the Modern World - This course went through the basic use of mathematics in science. My professor encouraged us all to learn for ourselves and think about things critically.
FREN 1109 Beginners' French 1 - I learned a very basic level of French in this course. It dealt with comprehension, speaking, reading and writing and a basic level.
CNST 1131 Introduction to Canadian Studies - In this course we studied different notable people in Canadian history. At the end of the course there was a huge class debate on different controversial issues.
ENGL 1151 Intro to Literature: Studies in Story - My professor demanded critical thinking in this course. We read different types of work that expanded my horizons. We also had to dig into the text and analyze content.
GNED 1201 Aesthetic Experiences and Ideas - I absolutely loved this course because it forced me to read novels that I would not have picked up otherwise. My professor also encouraged creative self-expression. It was a course I looked forward to each day.
GNED 1304 Communities and Societies - This course opened my eyes to different struggles people face in global, national and local communities. We looked at societies and explored the meaning of privacy, power, citizenship and sustainability.
GNED 1404 Writing about Images - In this course I learned more about writing and editing at a university level by analyzing images. I also was able to engage in rich discussions with my peers in this course.
Electives:
EDPY 200 Intro. Educational Psychology - In this course, transferred from Red Deer College, I was introduced to many philosophies and theorists of education. This was my first look into what education is and all the complexities around it.
PSYC 260 Basic Psychological Processes - This course transferred from Red Deer College and in it I learned about the history of psychology, behaviour, genes, states of consciousness, learning and memory.
SOCI 260 Social Concepts & Perspectives - This course transferred from Red Deer College and in it I learned about major theoretical approaches in sociology, research methods, culture, social interaction and deviance.
SOCI 373 Sociology of Aging - This course transferred from Red Deer College and in it I learned about what it means to be elderly, how our country will deal with an aging population and how different factors like culture, gender etcetera affect an aging society.
PHIL 1130 Philosophy: Sex and Love - This course challenged linear and rational thought by exploring many iconic philosophers theories on the relationship or separation between sex and love.
