Advising
Tips for the first Meeting: As with any student, a good goal for course selection is balance. Especially in their first year, students may want to avoid multiple writing-intensive courses or multiple courses with particularly heavy reading loads.
At least one course on a familiar topic might help students find their linguistic footing through content they have background in.
It might be useful to ask advisees what type of academic work they have done in English, especially if they raise the question of language proficiency. Asking for an example of a text they have read in English, and the length and topic of a recent paper are good ways to get a sense of their experience. No experience with papers over 2 pages and/or no papers making use of sources might be a cause for concern.
