Reading Skills
Extensive Reading
Extensive Reading refers to reading across a wide range of sources. This is not the kind of reading you do when studying for an exam or close reading a specific text to write a paper. It is the type of reading you do for pleasure, to follow current events, or to learn more about a topic.
Extensive reading can help:
- build schematic knowledge (how is a short story different from newspaper article? What should you expect when reading an argument in the New York Times?)
- improves confidence and motivation in learning and using the L2
- benefits writing development
However, extra work needs to be done for vocabulary development
