IB Mathematics SL is a two year course beginning junior year and continuing through senior year. Students are required to take both years. The prerequisites for this course is Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. During the first year, we will be mainly focused on precalculus topics such as algebra, functions and equations, and circular functions and trigonometry. However, we will also be spending time on probability and statistics (please see the IB Syllabus Outline linked below for more info on topics). During senior year, students will focus on calculus topics (derivatives, integrations and applications) and vectors.
Along with daily course work in these topics, students will be required to complete an Internal Assessment (IA), which is an mathematical exploration in the form of a written piece of work. In this IA, students will investigate an area of mathematics of their choice. This is usually started in April of junior with the rough draft being due before the end of school that year. Students will continue to work on their IA in the fall of senior year with the final paper due by the end of September of senior year.
During the month of May of their senior year, students will sit for two exams (IB calls them papers). Paper 1 is 90 minutes long and is a no calculator exam. Paper 2 is also 90 minutes long, but calculators are allowed (please see the TI Calculator handout linked here)
