Algebra 1 CP Open House Page

Algebra 1 CP introduces the mathematical language and techniques required as a background for the more advanced math courses. Mathematical connections and thinking skills are emphasized. Units covered include linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables, graphing lines, systems of linear equations, functions, measures of central tendency and variation, polynomials, factoring, and quadratic equations.

Class time could include a lecture and/or an activity. However, the main focus will be small group work where students can work with their peers and the teacher to solve problems on the current material. This will allow students to tackle the more challenging/higher order thinking problems that are needed in the 21st century.

Students, will be expected to complete daily homework assignments. Some nights, those homework assignments may be watching a video to get some background on a topic before it is discussed in class. Other times, homework assignments will be completing problems that were not finished in class.

Please see the TI Calculator Handout that is linked here. In this class and all future math classes at GHS, students will be required to use a graphing calculator to solve problems. These calculators can even be used on the SAT's. We suggest the TI-84 or higher calculator that is talked about in the handout. Although we have some calculators for students to borrow during class time, they cannot take the calculators home, which will hinder their ability to do some homework assignments. Investing in one of these calculators now, will allow your child to get at least 4 years of use out of the calculator.
