Social Studies
The Morris Plains School District believes that social studies is taught in order to provide a framework of knowledge, skills and attitudes which will enable our students to become fully participating members in an ever changing democratic society.
The role of social studies is to develop students who understand the past, appreciate its origins and comprehend their own role in the present and future.
It is our philosophy that social studies should be consistent and cumulative learning in grades K-8. The six social studies disciplines of history, geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, and political science will be included at all grade levels.
To meet this end, the following goals are established:
To provide a firm foundation for continued historical and geographical study
To develop an understanding of our system of government and law, from its roots in ancient civilizations to its present day applications
To cultivate an understanding and appreciation of the citizen’s role in the local, national, and global communities
To prepare students for civic participation
To develop a personal responsibility toward the rights of others
To develop an awareness of current and continuing issues and historical perspective
To become aware of the roles of conflict, cooperation and change in human affairs
