Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Bard, offer opportunities to support and enrich the learning process. These tools can provide assistance and spark creativity. However, it's important they are used in a way that upholds the principles of academic integrity.
Here are some guidelines for how AI can be used ethically and responsibly:
1. Use AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch: AI is here to assist us, to inspire, and clarify. But remember, the thoughts, analysis, and crafting of the assignments you turn in need to be your own.
2. If it is Appropriate to Use AI, Cite Your Sources: Any insights or phrases you borrow from AI need to be properly cited. As with any source, it should be limited to a quotation of no more than a sentence. AI can be used to support your work, but not be turned in passing as your original work.
3. Use AI for Understanding, Not for Shortcuts: Use AI to clarify your questions and seek further understanding. Don't use it as a way to avoid reading, thinking deeply, or engaging with the text. Do not ask AI to rewrite your work.
4. Use AI for Learning, Not Just Task Completion: Aim to understand and develop skills, not just to finish an assignment.
5. Use AI As a Tutor, not a Replacement for Reading: While reading a text AI can help you to understand parts of the reading that you need further clarification on. However, do not bypass the reading and solely rely on AI.
Unacceptable Use - Do Not Rely on AI For the Following
Asking things like "What are the main points of the reading passage?"
Requesting direct answers to specific questions without any effort to read or understand the material.
Asking for a summary or paraphrasing of the reading passage instead of reading it.
Requesting AI to write the entire essay or provide a ready-made thesis statement.
Requesting direct answers to discussion questions or assignments without reflecting on the material.
Requesting a detailed plot summary or of a text without reading the text.
Asking for direct answers to multiple-choice questions or quizzes without attempting to answer them independently.
What happens if these guidelines are not followed? Unattributed use of AI-generated content, over-reliance on AI for your work, or using AI to avoid reading or analysis will be considered violations of the school’s academic integrity/plagiarism policy. (Find this online).
In order to verify that you have not resorted to using AI or cheating you should be able to discuss the topic verbally and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of anything submitted. An inability to support/extend your work through conversation or extension questions will demonstrate a need to relearn the material and provide new evidence of the learning.
AI can be a fantastic tool to aid in education. As a student you need to ensure that anything you submit is an accurate representation of your own personal learning and capabilities. Please use AI responsibly.
