Ms. Contreras, Cristina, and Xoco
Hello! My name is Ms. Contreras. I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at Pulaski High School in Milwaukee. I have been teaching in Milwaukee Public Schools for 13 years. I love working at Pulaski because of a very diverse group of students and families that we service. Our school is a home to students from over 20 different countries. Pulaski High School offers a number of ESL courses and co-taught core content courses to support students who are learning English as their second or third language to promote their academic advancement and life success.
I come from a family of educators. I decided to be like mom and dad a long time ago. First, I went to college in Ukraine, my native country. After I moved to the United States in 1999, I transferred to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Today, I am a licensed ESL and Spanish teacher.
I am also a proud mom of a 13 year old daughter, Cristina. She loves to play different sports, cook, ride her bike, and play with our dog, Xoco. We do many fun things together. Cristina and I like to go hiking, camping, and kayaking in summer; in winter, we often go sledding and visit indoor water parks. We also like to travel. Our favorite places we recently visited are Ireland and New Orleans, LA.
I like to read professional books that help me improve my teaching practices. My favorite type of literature is historical fiction novels written by international authors. One of my favorite authors is Julia Alvarez and her book "In the Time of the Butterflies."
