6th graders!
Welcome to Mr. Hutt’s class!
Here is your first homework assignment! (Yes, it will be graded!) Have your parents read and discuss this with you and then both of you sign it. It is due 8/20.
We continue to see a lot of positive things happen at our school, as we welcome some new teachers I know this trend will only continue. Here are some informational items; please take a moment to read and discuss them with your child.
Open-door: Please feel free to visit my classroom at any time. Some times are better if you would like to talk to me, but if you just want to see how the class is doing, any time is fine. Sign in at the office and come see us! I am usually at school around 7:15, if you would like to discuss something, up until 8:15 and after school are the best times. Please be aware the last few minutes before school starts is generally not a good time.
Homework: The upper-grade teachers spend a lot of time together planning the student’s homework. Most students will have homework every night, especially in math and language arts. All homework will be posted in the classroom and online. Students will be given time to write homework down in their planners.
Planners/Organizers: Middle school students are notoriously disorganized. (As if I need to tell you!) We will be providing the students with a complete organizational system. A letter will come home explaining how the system will work, parents, please take the time to check your child’s organizer regularly. I know the letter sounds rigid, and if a student has a comparable organization system they may use it.
6th Social Studies Students should generally have one homework assignment or less per week in social studies. Time will be given in-class for most assignments, encourage your child to make good use of this time to limit their amount of homework each week.
Late Assignments/Extra Credit: Students will be given three late assignment/extra credit slips that may be used to turn in late assignments up to one week after they are due and still receive full credit for what they earned on the completed assignment. Any slips not used may be turned in for one percentage point extra credit for each unused slip at the end of each trimester. There will be extra credit beyond these. Students should take advantage of extra credit as it becomes available throughout each trimester, generally there will not be extra credit available in the last two weeks of each trimester beyond the late slips. Mr. Burbank will go over the grading of late assignments.
Grades: Grades are posted online and weekly hard copies are sent home on Fridays; please select the choice that works best for you at the end of this letter. This is how we communicate your child’s academic progress. Grades should be available by the third week of school. Please notify me if you are having problems checking grades or are not receiving a hard copy if you have requested it. Even if you choose to check grades online, we still send home hard copies every Friday.
Dress code: Please make sure to follow the dress code as we will continue to follow the handbook concerning dress code.
Assignment Handling: All assignments should be turned in to appropriate folder unless it is electronic. Graded assignments will be placed in the appropriate return basket. Students should check for returned assignments regularly. It is not uncommon that I will have well over 500 assignments to grade and enter into my computer each week. With this many entries I am bound to make an occasional mistake. As weekly progress reports are checked, if a student or parent sees a discrepancy simply show me the corrected work as soon as possible and I will update the grade immediately. I grade all assignments at school; they only travel from the assignment folder, to my desk, and to the return box. Students should keep their returned assignments in their organizer until it has been checked against their progress report. We will follow the late policy as stated in the handbook.
Website: You can find all homework assignments and other information on my website located at:
https://sites.google.com/a/millvilleschool.net/mr-hutt/
You may want to bookmark it for quick access of assignment due dates!
Electronics: Students are encouraged to bring a wired mouse and headphones/ear buds to class. Please read the handbook concerning cell phones. The dollar store usually has cheap earbuds, an extra set in a plastic bag placed in their organizer is a great idea!
We are so fortunate to have the students, families, and staff that make-up this wonderful school! With your help, I know the students will continue to grow, both academically and personally, and we will have a fun, challenging, and productive year.
Thank you,
Mr. Hutt
