Grade 4

Recorder Karate

As part of our grade four general music curriculum, we will be learning how to read music through playing the soprano recorder in music class. The school has provided each student with an instrument. Over the next several months (late September to late January), we will begin a new recorder program called Recorder Karate. Each student will have the opportunity to earn "belts" of different colors as he or she progresses through the program.

In order for students to move forward, they will need to practice at home. Your child is responsible for bringing their recorder and Recorder Karate packet to music class every time they have music. An easy way to ensure that your child's recorder comes to school is to have them always put it away in their backpack right after they are through practicing. Recorders are not to be taken out when riding on the school bus. Otherwise, students will lose this privilege.

Another option is to purchase a recorder to be left at home while the one the school provides stays at school. Recorders may also be purchased and delivered to the school through the David French Music, Co. in Westborough at 1-800-366-5993. You are not limited to purchasing from this music store.

Students may also come to the music room for extra help, to practice, or test for their next "belt" during their recess time on Wednesday. Just a reminder, there is a $4.00 charge to replace a recorder if one is lost or broken through misuse.

The best way to clean the recorder is to simply place it in the dishwasher. The recorder may also be washed with warm water and a mild dish detergent to air dry.

Our goal is to have as many students as possible achieve their purple belt (Old MacDonald) by the end of the second term. Accelerated students may try to obtain all nine "belts"

When The Saints Go Marching In- blue belt

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star- red belt

Amazing Grace- brown belt

Ode To Joy- black belt

Practice Directions

(practice slow with each step before increasing speed)

1. Clap and say rhythms (use 1-2-3-4)

2. Say pitch names (letters of music alphabet A, B, C, D, E, F, G)

3. Say pitch names while practicing fingerings

4. Play it!

5. Play again with a steady beat. No stopping for mistakes.

For students having difficulty reading music, remember to practice slow first, quiz yourself on naming notes and knowing fingerings, play along with the slower sound recordings, and try using version 2 of the songs listed below.

Parents and students are invited to use the following resources:

1. All songs are available below in PDF format to download and print in the event a student has lost their music.

2. An interactive fingering chart is available on the following link http://www.musick8.com/rkdojo/rkchart.php
