For this project, we are going to learn about Positive and Negative space in a piece of art.
Positive Space refers to the main subject matter in the artwork. For example, if you are drawing a vase filled with flowers, the vase and flowers are considered to be the positive space.
Negative Space refers to the area around the subject matter. This is often called the background. This would be the space around your vase and flowers. This space is usually considered "less important" than the positive space, but it doesn't have to be.
We are going to play with these opposite art ideas for our next art project!
You will need:
(Remember! You can change the materials as necessary, according to what you have at home!)
Pencil
Colored Construction paper (2 different colors, both the same size)
Scissors
Glue
Marker (optional)
1) Watch the YouTube video below called "Positive : Negative Art".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrEDpWAuOM4
Watch the whole video through first, before attempting to make it yourself! Once you have your art materials ready, you will have to watch the video again and pause it while you are following along. There are also some images below to help you with each step!
2) Choose to make either an Apple or Pear shape for your artwork.
3) Draw half of the apple/pear and leaf shapes on one piece of construction paper (refer to video for help!). And carefully cut it out.
4) Glue the "leftover" or "negative space" paper on one side of the other color of construction paper (see video).
5) Glue the shapes you cut out on the opposite side of the paper, so it looks like a mirror image.
*** Cut out the "core" of the fruit first, like in the video and glue that as well!
6) Draw the seeds with pencil or marker to complete the picture!

Week of 5/4 - Rainbow "Pasta" Fish
Watch the read-aloud video of the book "The Rainbow Fish", Here is the link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9mryuEKkKc&feature=emb_rel_pause
You will need:
(Remember! You can change the materials as necessary, according to what you have at home!)
Pencil
Colored construction paper OR paint
Tag board or thin cardboard (like from a cereal box)
Paintbrushes
Paint OR food coloring
Scissors
Glue
Elbow Macaroni Pasta (or other pasta shape!)
Black marker
Optional: Sequins, glitter, pom-poms, googly eye
Steps:
1) Download, print, and cut out the "Fish Template" PDF found below. You may design your own fish shape if you prefer or cannot print out the one provided.
2) You may do either of the following options for Step 2:
Option1: Trace the template fish shape on a sheet of construction paper (any color!) AND trace it on a piece of thin cardboard (example: cereal box). Match up the shapes and glue the colored construction paper fish to the cardboard fish.
Option 2: Trace the template fish shape to a thin piece of cardboard (example: cereal box). Cut out the shape of the fish from the cardboard, and then paint the cardboard fish a color of your choice!
3) If possible, paint your elbow macaroni different colors OR dye them with food coloring. Let them dry. If you choose to keep the pasta its natural color, that's OK too!!!
4) Once your macaroni is dry, glue your macaroni on your fish to create the look of scales. You can choose what colors go where, and/or make a pattern!
5) Draw or glue on an eye for your fish!
6) Optional! Add other fun materials to add texture to your fish! Sequins and glitter will make it look like "The Rainbow Fish"! Or you can add pom-poms, tissue paper, etc...

Week of 5/11 - Recycled Robot Collage
.
Let's make a robot out of things we have lying around the house! This is a great way to recycle/reuse some items that would normally end up in the trash!
You will need:
(You can change the materials as necessary, according to what you have at home! These are suggestions. Everyone's robot will be different depending on what you use!)
Thin cardboard (like a cereal box or cracker box)
Construction paper
Scissors
Glue (preferably Elmer's liquid)
Paint
Markers
Juice/Milk bottle lids
Beads
Straws
Popsicle Sticks
Pom Poms
Foil
Buttons
Googly eyes
Corks
Egg cartons
Craft foam
Fabric scraps
Junk mail (cut out letters/numbers)
Steps:
1) Cut out the front panel of a cereal or cracker box. Paint it a solid color, or cover it with construction paper. This will be the "background" for you robot collage.
2) Cut out square shapes for the body and head of your robot. These can be made of cardboard or paper or aluminum foil!
3) Design your robot. Lay out all pieces before gluing!
Decide what materials you want to use for the neck, arms, legs, eyes, mouth, feet, hands, "electronic" buttons, etc... And lay them out before gluing so you can try different things before committing.
4) Glue down the different pieces and objects. Liquid glue will work much better for larger/heavier objects such as buttons and lids.
5) Draw small details with marker (if necessary, example: eyes, mouth)

Week of 5/18 - Nature Art Name
Let's get outside and make some Art!!!
You will need:
(You can change the materials as necessary, according to what you find outside! These are suggestions.)
A shoebox or bucket to collect your nature items in
Leaves (different shapes/color)
Flowers or flower petals
Twigs
Tree bark
Rocks/pebbles
Moss
Seeds/nuts
Acorns
Pinecones
Clovers
WARNINGS:
***Complete this assignment on warm, clear day! Wind and rain will make it difficult to create your artwork!
***Be careful of "poisonous" leaves, mushrooms or berries! You don't want your artwork to give you a rash or make you sick!!! Ask an adult if you aren't sure something is safe or not!
***Ask an adult if it is okay to pick some flowers for your artwork! We don't want to ruin someone's beautiful garden!
Steps:
1) Walk around your yard or a nearby park, and search for natural items that you could use for your "Name Art." Collect things in your shoebox or bucket to use later. Make sure you get enough of each item so you can create a letter of your first name!
2) Find a nice area in your yard to lay out your collected materials. This will be the background for your name art. Some suggestions are a large stone, an old tree stump, a grassy area, a wood deck, or just a clean area of blacktop.
3) Decide what materials will work best for each letter of your first name and begin laying it out. You can always change or rearrange things as you go! See the pictures below for some ideas!
.
4) Once you are happy with the arrangement of natural items, take a photo of your name project! Make sure the photo is close-up enough that I can clearly see what natural items you used, AND I can read your full first name!
***The photos you take will be the only "proof" of doing this project, so take them before your items blow away, wilt, or get eaten up by critters!

White crayon/oil pastel (a white paint pen will work too)
Scissors
Glue
Stapler
Steps:
1) Cut out or find a rectangular sheet of blue paper for your "ocean" background.
2) Choose a color for your pufferfish. Cut out or find a rectangular sheet of paper in your chosen color. Make sure this rectangle is smaller than the blue paper.
3) Use a white crayon, white oil pastel, or white paint pen to draw a circle for the fish's mouth near the center of the strip. Also add white dots around the strip in varying sizes. See picture below:
You will need:
4) Roll the strip into a loop and staple closed.
5) Staple the rolled paper onto the blue background paper.
6) Cut out two small circles from white paper. And, cut out two smaller circles from black paper.

Week of 6/1 - Symmetry Superheroes!
Symmetry is when an object looks the exact same on one side as the other. To see if an object is symmetrical, you draw a line of symmetry or a line dividing an object to show a perfect match on each side. It's like making a mirror image.
Here are some examples Symmetry:
Directions:
1) Click on the link below to find the Superhero Symmetry Activity!
https://www.tptschoolaccess.com/student-
https://www.tptschoolaccess.com/student-view/MTU5MTcxNzE1Nzc4MjAyMC0wNS0yOVQxODoxMzoyOS43ODha
2) Choose a Superhero picture to print out. (You can do more than one!)
3) Draw the symmetrical, mirror image of the Superhero on the handout, as best you can.
4) Color in your completed Superhero.

Week of 6/8 - Rainbow Leaf Print OR Leaf Rubbing
.
For the "Rainbow Leaf Print" you will need:
Leaves (fresh leaves please! NO old, dry leaves) **Flat leaves work best!
Washable Markers
White tagboard/card stock or sturdy white paper
Paper Towel
Water
Steps:
1) Go on a walk around the yard and gather up some different leaves to experiment with. Fresh, flat, green leaves work best for this project. I recommend hydrangea leaves, hostas, and maple leaves.
2) Lay the smooth side of the leaf down. The rougher, vein covered side should be facing up. Color the rougher side with washable markers. Try to color evenly, over the entire leaf, switching up colors whenever the mood strikes!
3) When the leaf is covered in washable marker you’re ready to print! Grab your white paper and a damp paper towel. Wipe across the paper with the paper towel so it’s just damp, but not soggy.
4) Turn the colored part of the leaf onto the paper and press down gently. Press all over to be sure that the colors from the leaf have a chance to transfer to the paper and then carefully remove the leaf.
5) You can print multiple rainbow leaves on a single paper. Keep in mind that wetting the paper to print further leaves will smear the marker from the first print. So print away but no overlapping!
For the "Leaf Rubbing" you will need:
Leaves (various types)
White paper (printer paper works well for this!)
Crayons, paper wrapper peeled away
1) Go on a walk around the yard and gather up some different shaped leaves.
2) Arrange leaves on table. The rougher, vein covered side should be facing up.
3) Place a sheet of white paper over the leaves, covering them up.
4) While holding the paper steady with one hand, rub the side of a crayon slowly, but firmly over the paper. The texture of the leaves should appear on your paper.
5) Experiment with using different colors and overlapping leaves.

https://www.tptschoolaccess.com/student-view/MTU5MTcxNTIyOTQ5MjAyMC0wNi0wOFQxNTo0NjoyMC45MTVa
2) Choose an animal to draw (Yes! You can try more than one!)
3) You can either roll a dice to see what parts of the animal you will use, or simply choose the parts that appeal to you. Using a dice will make it more like a game.
4) Draw each portion of the cartoon animal at a time.
5) Once you have completed all parts of the animal, you can color your drawing.
Make as many cartoons as you wish! Have Fun!!!
