Title IX - Discrimination
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in education, including K-12 institutions and colleges/universities. It has been used to promote equity in education by ensuring that girls and women receive equal resources and treatment in the classroom and forging the way for the establishment of women’s athletic programs. Title IX holds schools liable for sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Nondiscrimination Statement
Middletown Unified School District is committed to providing equal opportunity for all individuals in education. District programs, activities and practices shall be free from unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying based on the student's actual race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age, religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or gender expression; the perception of one or more of such characteristics; or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics. Any complaint regarding discrimination in education programs and activities must be filed in accordance with the district’s Uniform Complaint Procedures. BP 0410, BP/AR 1312.3

Harassment/Bullying
The Governing Board is committed to maintaining a safe school environment that is free from harassment and discrimination. The Board prohibits, at any district school or activity, unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying of any student based on the actual or perceived characteristics specified above. The Board also prohibits any form of retaliation against any student who files a complaint or report of discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or bullying. Students or employees who engage in discrimination, harassment, intimidation, bullying or retaliation will be subject to disciplinary action. Students should report any harassment, intimidation or bullying to the school principal or other staff member and may file a complaint under the district’s Uniform Complaint Procedures. Sexual Harassment
Middletown Unified School District prohibits sexual harassment of students by other students, employees or other persons, at school or at school-sponsored or school-related activities. The Board also prohibits retaliatory behavior or action against any person who files a complaint, testifies or otherwise participates in district complaint processes. Sexual harassment will subject the harasser to disciplinary action. Students who feel aggrieved because of conduct that may constitute sexual harassment should use the complaint procedures provided by district regulation. BP/AR 5145.7.
Nondiscrimination and Equivalent Opportunities in the Athletic Programs
Middletown Unified School District is committed to providing gender equity and ensuring nondiscrimination in district and interscholastic athletic programs and activities. The district's athletic program shall be free from discrimination and discriminatory practices. The Superintendent or designee shall ensure that equivalent athletic opportunities are provided for males and females. Any complaint regarding the district's athletic program should be filed in accordance with the district's Uniform Complaint Procedures. BP/AR 6145.2, BP/AR 1312.3
