How are students identified for language screening?
When students are registered in District 70, parents complete a Home Language Survey. Students who have a language other than, or in addition to, English spoken at home, will be screened by the EL staff.
How are students identified for participation in the EL program?
Language screening will determine if the student is eligible for participation in the district's EL program. Parents will be sent a written notification along with recommendations for program placement.
Can parents refuse EL services even if their child tested as an English Learner?
Yes, to refuse language support services, parents must provide the district with a signed, written statement that they do not wish their child to participate in the EL program. Once the letter is received, students are immediately withdrawn from the program. However, the State requires non-participating students to take the ACCESS test annually until the exit criteria is met.
