Today and throughout the week students practiced building their reading stamina in Read to Self. We are working up to 20 minutes of reading in which students are exhibiting Read to Self Independence! Read to Self is one of five components of the Daily Five structure for reading. They have been very focused and have been improving quickly. During this time they are reading books that they choose to read. We began by discussing what independence would look when students are reading. We discussed ways to find a good book for them. I will continue working with students on ways to pick out a book that is fitting for them. Once we are set up in our routines this will allow me time to listen to each child read and to conference with them individually about their reading. It is so great to hear their cheers and excitement when they hear it is time to grab a book and read!
