Inside the classroom we will be using The Daily Five during our Literacy Block. The Daily Five is a literacy structure that allows the students to work independently, increasing their skills in reading and writing. It consists of five task. When we introduce each task in the classroom we begin by discussing what it should look like when students are independent in this task. We discuss what the students will be doing during this time and also what the teacher will be doing. Then, the children work on building their stamina until they are successful at being independent while doing that task.
When all five tasks have been introduced and the children are fully engaged in reading and writing activities, I am able to work with small groups and meet with students one on one. The students really look forward to this time. They appreciate the independence and choice. It encourages their love and excitement for reading. Ask your child about Daily Five and see what he/she has to say. I anticipate your child will tell you about the class stamina, how we are working towards independence, and maybe you will even hear about some of the fantastic things your child has written or read during this time.
