Math
We are teaching math using Illustrative Math.
Currently, we will spend time at the beginning of the year assessing where students are in their math journey. We are using Common Core based assessments. We will be grouping students based on need within our classrooms once these assessments are complete.
3rd Graders will begin the year working on Multiplication and Reading Graphs.
4th Graders will begin the Understanding Factors and Multiples.
A great place to practice math skills is IXL or Splash Learn
Math is everywhere in our lives! Here are some ways you can show your child and help them with basic math skills:
Practice basic math facts with your child at home (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) for automaticity. Use flash cards, play card games (cribbage is a great way to practice addition), ask them math fact questions randomly (a great game to play in the car).
Have your children help you cook by reading a recipe, have them double the recipe to help with multiplication of fractions and whole numbers by 2.
Have your child help you measure for a building project or to see if a piece of furniture will fit in a specific spot.
If you need to divide a group of something evenly among the members of your family, have your child help you figure out how many each person will get.
When you are shopping, have your child help you estimate how much money you will spend by rounding to the nearest dollar.
If you are paying with cash, have your child help to figure out how much change you will receive from the cashier.
