Tip 1
Remember..Trick Words do not get "marked up".
When having students "mark up" words or sentences, trick words do not get "marked up", just as they do not get tapped out.
In the Wilson Reading program, students circle trick words, which helps them to remember not to do anything else to the word.
This might be something you would like to encourage your students to do also.
(When scoring a test at the end of the unit, students shouldn't be penalized if theydo "mark up" a trick word, but you should remind them of the fact that trick words do not get "marked up".)
Tip 2
Remember to plug in Nonsense Words when you are using your sound cards to build words and also when you are doing Echo Find Letters/Words with the Magnetic Letter Boards.
This helps children blend words that are unknown to them.
For those of you who are asking yourself what a Nonsense Word is, here are some examples: biff pem chut rish
They are not real words. (Some teachers refer to them as Dr. Seuss words.)
Tip 3
Do Not make up your own words as you go along!!!
Always use the words that are found on the resource pages in the back of the unit!
Use these words whether you are utilizing the standard sound cards or the magnetic tile boards to form words.
The Wilson Reading Co. carefully selected these words so they would fit into the unit you are teaching. (By using these words you are helping to reinforce skills taught and you will not "accidentally" embarrass yourself by using a word that is an exception to the rule.)
