Back to School Letter

August 8, 2013

Dear Student,

I hope you are enjoying your summer. This summer I have taken classes on teaching Writer’s Workshop, using the third grade set of iPads and math. Next week I am going on vacation with 4 generations of my family!

I am looking forward to meeting you on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Below are some of the things you will need to know about third grade.

This coming school year you will be learning about many exciting things and doing lots of experiments and investigations. Some of the topics we will be exploring are nutrition, Mount Desert Island history, geology, our Solar System, Acadia National Park and stewardship of our ocean. We will be using iPads to practice skills and do some book making. The address for our class website is: https://sites.google.com/a/mdirss.org/ms-chappell-s-third-grade-class-2013/ We will be adding the books we make to the web site throughout the year.

Please tell your parent[s] that I will be at school several days near the end of August and would be glad schedule a meeting if they and/or you would like to talk with me before the school year starts. Please have them email me at cchappell@mdirss.org to schedule a time. I will not be available by phone or email the week of August 11th, so just leave a message, and I will get back to you once I get back from my “unplugged” vacation!

We will be having a snack break each morning. Please bring a small healthy snack for this time.

If you choose to buy breakfast, lunch or lunch milk, the money should be brought to school on the first day of the week. The money needs to be in an envelope with your name, my name, and the amount of money written on the front of the envelope. Hot lunch is $2.40 a day or $12.00 a week. If you are bringing lunch you may purchase milk for $.30 a day or $1.50 a week. Breakfast is available for $1.25 a day. These amounts are subject to change as we get closer to the beginning of the school year.

Please bring the following supplies to school:

  • pencils (You will need to supply yourself with pencils all year long.)

  • erasers

  • 3 glue sticks

  • crayons

  • a pair of scissors

  • a supply box for your desk [about 2”x9’’x4”]

  • a water bottle

  • an inexpensive set of headphones/earbuds to be used with an iPad

  • 1 deck of inexpensive playing cards

  • a white board marker and a clean sock to use as an eraser

  • a bag with the following coins in it:

    • 6 quarters

    • 10 dimes

    • 10 nickels

    • 10 pennies

You may find it convenient to have your own scotch tape, markers, and/or colored pencils. We use a lot of tissues during the year, so if you want to bring a box for our class supply, it will be most appreciated. You will not need to bring notebooks, trapper keepers, paper, or folders - we will supply those!

All third grade classrooms are located at the far end of the Conners building hall. My classroom is second from the last on the right.

Our school day starts at 8:15. The first morning you may come directly into the building through the front doors and come on down to the classroom, or you may go to the playground and play until a teacher brings you in. When you arrive, we will begin to create a new learning community in our class. Together we will make this a great year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Carol Chappell
