Run-Hide-Fight is an option based active shooter protocol developed by the Department of Homeland Security. The concept is to offer people options depending on the information that they have available in the moment. For school purposes we employ an option based protocol so teachers and students don't feel that they have to only take one course of action.
The first and foremost action is to run or evacuate. If safe to do a person should evacuate the building and run to their reunification location. The decision to run is based on information on the location of the threat in relation to their location.
The second action is to hide or barricade their space. This is referred to as a lockdown. The classroom they are in is secured from the inside. The barricade is not taken down until their is information indicating it is safe so that they can evacuate.
The final action is to fight. If a threat is able to make it into a room then the occupants need to be proactive and fight the intruder. How this looks in each classroom and grade level varies.
