Week of April 16th-April 20th


This week we will be studying:

Reading: "Let it Shine" p. 573-585
Vocabulary Words= convictions, persistent, oppression, defiance, evident, momentum, remedies, resonated
Friday's test will cover these vocabulary words and comprehension skill in the week's story,Summarizing, as well as the ELA skill of Comparing with Good and Bad. Students will complete a language worksheet on Tuesday and Thursday to assess their understanding of this concept.

Spelling: Weekly word lists are distributed. Students have workbooks from which classwork is completed daily.  Friday tests will consist of the 25 words of the week.  
This week's topic is "Suffixes"

Writing: In honor of poetry month we will be starting a poetry unit of study. Monday students will be writing Free style poems and Haikus. Wednesday students will be exposed to Couplets and literary elements: Similes, Rhymes, and Repetition. Thursday they will try their hand at writing Cinquains, a five line stanza.

Math:  We will be starting Chapter 10: Geometry this week. We will be covering a lesson each day starting Monday with Lesson 10.1 and end the week with the mid-chapter checkpoint on Friday. Students will have a math assignment to complete as practice each day.


Social Studies:  We will be covering Unit 6 Lesson 4: The Cold War on Monday and Tuesday. Unit 6 Lesson 5: Struggles in India on Wednesday and Friday. Worksheets will be given after each lesson to assess comprehension.
 
Science:  We will be covering Module D: Chapter 8 Lesson 5: Erosion and Deposition on Monday and Tuesday. A lesson outline to reinforce reading comprehension will follow. Wednesday we will explore the rock cycle with a hands-on activity identifying various types of rocks.  Thursday and Friday will be spent on Chapter 8 Lesson 6: The Rock Cycle. A lesson outline will follow each day's lesson.

Metropolis Elementary promotes college readiness within our students.  No longer will the question be, "Am I going to college?" but, "Where do I want to go to college?".  The initiative focuses on encouragement of higher education through exposure to universities.  Mrs. Hicks's class is a  proud sponsor of U of L.
