Facts about computer studies

  • This is when the first KCSE computer studies paper was tested in the country

Technical

Computer Studies belongs to the technical department because its a technical course alongside Home science, Art and Design, Agriculture, Wood Work, Metal Works, Building and Construction, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing and Design and Aviation. this means its a group 4 subject.

451

This is the code given by KNEC- Kenya National Examination Council for Computer Studies Examination Papers.

Three (3)

Number of papers examined by KNEC in main examinations. These papers are namely:

-Paper One (1) - 451/1

This is a theory paper and in the main examinations, it carries more votes (weight) compared to the other two. Out of 100, it has a weight of 50

-Paper Two (2) - 451/2

This is a two and half hours practical activity paper. Out of 100 marks, it carries a weight of 25 marks. But according to me, its the simplest paper to pass compared to these other two because of its nature and content

-Paper Three (3) - 451/3

This is the computer project that takes 7 months to pursue. In some quarters, its the students nightmare paper, however, with the time span provided, this paper isn't hard either its the approach that makes it hard or simple. good preparation and early enough is the key. it has a weight of 25 marks to the grid of 100

Computer Lab

This is a room set aside for the facilitation and learning of computer studies in a school. Its a core requirement for a school to be granted permission to pursue computer studies. The computer lab should have the following fundamentals

  1. At least one computer for every two students per session
  2. A printer
  3. Enough chairs for Students
  4. Enough room for 40-55 students
  5. Internet Computing facilities
  6. Reasonably good computers with:
  • Microsoft Wndows XP, 07, 08 Vista
  • CD/DVD writer
  • Microsoft Office XP, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013
  • Adobe Pagemaker 6.5, 7.0 or later versions
  • and any other equipments key to learning of computer studies in secondary education

During Examinations

  1. Make sure the local area network is flat
  2. There should be a power backup like a generator
  3. The printer should be ready and working
  4. There should be at least two computers idle- just in case of a technical hitch
  5. Paper one and two take 2 1/2 hours each
  6. Computer teacher/technician should be standby to provide technical assistance.
  7. Students should not carry educational resources into the exam room. However they should have blank CDs for paper2 and paper three.
