IB Math Year 1 Syllabus 2020-2021
Welcome to IB Math Year 1! This course will prepare students for the second year of IB Math or moving forward in college math classes.
There are actually two courses in one for this year and we will be learning the core material between both. Here is the breakdown of each course:
Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches
Emphasis on algebraic methods
Develop strong skills in mathematical thinking
Real and abstract mathematical problem solving
For students interested in mathematics, engineering physical sciences, and some economics
Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation
Emphasis on modelling and statistics
Develops strong skills in applying mathematics to the real-world
Real mathematical problem solving using technology
For students interested in social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, statistics, business, engineering, some economics, psychology and design
Throughout the year, we will sprinkle in pieces of the separate courses so that students can decide which course to continue with next year or where their passions lie when moving on to higher education and careers.

Grading Scale
The following grade values are used to assign a final grade in the class:
A+ 100-97.5% B+ 89.49-87.5% C+ 79.49-77.5% D+ 69.49-67.5% F - below 59.5%
A 97.49-91.5% B 87.49-81.5% C 77.49-71.5% D 67.49-61.5%
A- 91.49-89.5% B- 81.49-79.5% C- 71.49-69.5% D- 61.49-59.5%
Final Grade Calculation
Student grades are calculated the following way for each semester:
70% Summative Assessments
20% Formative Assessments (Skill Checks) and Activities
10% Homework
Student grades are cumulative over the entire semester. Some assignments may be reported in the gradebook but not included in the final grade calculation.
Late and Missing Work
Generally, there are announced deadlines for late work. Late homework will only be accepted until the day prior to that chapter’s assessment.
Assignments
Homework: Students are expected to attempt and complete 100% of the assigned problems. Working with other students on homework is allowed, as long as each of you does your own work. Most homework will be assigned using an online program called DeltaMath. DeltaMath gives immediate feedback as you work, which helps you improve! Due dates for homework will be the last day of the week at 2:00 pm. So most weeks it will be Friday, but some weeks will be earlier.
Skill Checks: Skill checks will typically be assigned each week during virtual learning. These are assignments you must complete on your own as they are used to assess if you need extra help on a concept. You will be given feedback on your skill check and will have the opportunity to retake the skill check to improve your grade if retake criteria is met (see below).
Assessments
Assessments are typically announced in advance, and it is up to the discretion of Mrs. Kakuk which notes or other resources, if any, may be used while taking an assessment. If extra time is needed to complete assessments, students may request extra time. However, assessments may be timed in order to prepare for the time constraints on standardized tests, such as the ACT.
Retakes
Some assessments and skill checks may offer retake opportunities. The grade will be replaced by the new retake grade. The retake assessment will cover the same learning objectives as the original assessment, but may be in a different format (for example, use short-answer questions instead of multiple-choice). Retake opportunities will have announced deadlines.
Students who wish to earn the opportunity to retake an assessment or skill check must fulfil the appropriate requirements. The requirements to qualify for a retake opportunity are:
All assigned homework is completed at a high-quality level and turned in on time
Assessment corrections are completed at a high-quality level by the due date
Student creates a retake plan and submits the plan to Mrs. Kakuk. This plan will include the method of remediation/extra practice on topics missed on the original assessment, and the date of the retake.
Student submits proof of remediation/extra practice on topics missed on the original assessment by the deadline.

Note that the materials requirement for this class is:
Two notebooks: one for notes and one for homework
Ruler, pencils, pens
Graphing Calculator (TI-84 or better preferred, students have access to an App on their Chromebook for a graphing calculator)
I have read this document and understand that I am committing to mathematically challenging work in IB Math Year 1. I can expect to do homework and/or studying each day.
I also commit to having integrity (doing the right thing when no one else is watching). I will honor my education and be engaged in the learning process. This means putting forth my best effort, doing my own work, using my resources to help me practice/learn my skills, being prepared for class each day, participating in class, and encouraging my classmates.
I know that it is my responsibility to use our virtual learning resources responsibly in order to learn math. While I realize that working with others is encouraged for homework assignments, I will complete skill checks and assessments on my own. This is so both I and my teacher can assess what I know, and if there are concepts I still need help understanding.
I will use my resources, ask my classmates for help, and ask Mrs. Kakuk for extra help if I need it. I commit to try my best this year to get better and grow as a student.
