CHILDREN'S HEALTHY EATING & NUTRITION/INTRO TO CHILD NUTRITION
COURSE OVERVIEW
The course provides an overview of child nutrition issues, with an emphasis on practical skills and approaches to influence positive eating behaviors that promote optimal health and nutrition. Topics include basic nutrition principles, the feeding relationship, breastfeeding & child nutrition, planning healthy meals & snacks, food safety, childhood obesity, physical activity, nutrition education, child nutrition programs & food assistance resources.
COURSE ADVISORIES
ENGL 88 or ESL 186 or placement in ESL 188 or readiness for college-level English
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Compare how growth and developmental patterns from birth through childhood affect nutritional needs and eating behaviors, and vice versa.
Apply basic food management skills to plan and create simple and healthy meals and snacks.
Assess dietary adequacy using appropriate food guidance systems and current Dietary Guidelines for Americans to promote and maintain health.
Analyze the impact of food security and health disparities on families to increase access to nutritious and affordable food.
Plan, conduct, and evaluate effective techniques and resources for providing age appropriate nutrition education to youth.

This class is crosslisted with HLTH 177 - SEC 932 & CDEV 107 - SEC 932. You may take either course.
CLASS MEETINGS
This course has no scheduled meetings and requires the use of Canvas. All coursework is completed on Canvas using an internet enabled device. Students will also complete coursework in Canvas, which must be accessed using an internet enabled device. This class is 12 weeks. All exams are online.
