LIBR 59: Library Work Experience
Course Description
Supports competencies for library support staff though work experience under supervision for students wishing to clarify career development, pursue further education, or seek employment in library services or related industries. Workplaces include all types of libraries and in both public or technical service areas. PREREQ.: Approval of the Library Information Technology Department. Recommended Preparation, LIBR 53; LIBR 55A or LIBR 51; LIBR 55B; LIBR 56; MABS 60
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Describe workplace health and safety precautions relevant to the chosen employer
Describe expectations for quality performance in the typical library workplace
Formulate goals for personal work based learning objectives
Develop a process for on-going self-evaluation of knowledge and skills
Assess the steps for future career growth in library services

Orientation
There are no scheduled class meetings except for the online orientation to be scheduled the first week of the semester. Check back in late July for date. Students that can’t attend the orientation, must schedule a time to meet with the instructor individually. If needed, an additional in-person orientation or online orientation can be scheduled. This will be determined based on pre-course survey responses. The pre-course survey will go out in the course welcome email a few days before the course starts.
How does this course work?
Students will report to and work under supervision at their worksites. In addition to work experience, this course includes assignments and discussions. All discussions will take place and all assignments will be submitted online via Canvas. In order to succeed in this course, you must complete all assignments. Additionally, consistent, on-time attendance is expected by your workplace.
This course is located at https://ccsf.instructure.com in Canvas. It will be visible in an enrolled student's list of courses on the first day of class. In order to access Canvas, you must activate your RAM ID.
REQUIREMENT: You MUST have access to Microsoft Word OR compatible word processing software and Adobe Reader to access the handouts, assignments, and forms. Students may download Adobe Reader at http://get.adobe.com/reader/. Students can use their Google Docs student accounts or access MS Office for students (free) for word processing needs.
