Hello and welcome to Intercultural Communication
According to the CCSF the catalog, this class “Develops communication competence to manage conflict and interact with people who are culturally different. Students participate in discussions and complete written and oral assignments, developing communication strategies and skills that result in deliberate and fruitful intercultural outcomes.”
My goal is to increase student knowledge and awareness of the various intercultural dimensions of communication, identity, and conflict. In other words, why do we think, behave, and understand the world the way that we do, and what effect does that have on our relationships? The course is designed to meet these goals through self-reflection and drawing connections between intercultural theory and your own life.
The first part of the course introduces key concepts and explores theoretical perspectives in intercultural communication studies. The second part of the course will focus on the channels and processes of communication, such as language and nonverbal interactions. Finally, we will study specific applications of culture and communication, such intercultural competency in interpersonal relationships, how culture affects conflict styles and negotiation, and the influences of media and popular culture.
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to take a hands-on approach to learning and to examine their own beliefs and experiences of intercultural experiences as they concurrently engage with scholarship in the field. Students will learn communication strategies that result in more meaningful and smooth communication interactions, and increased self-awareness.
There are no in-person meetings for this course - all information will be shared online through our learning management system, Canvas. You will have readings, assignments, and discussion activities to complete each week, and due to the nature of the late-start schedule, getting behind is not an option. There are a few built in opportunities to catch up if you do get behind, but don't rely on those if you can help it.
For more information you can find the syllabus here, and a weekly schedule for the late-start Fall 2018 course here.
