Welcome to 6th Grade Math!
Curriculum Our math curriculum is McGraw Hill Reveal Math, a program designed to accelerate your learning. You will be learning math one grade-level standards ahead (e.g., 6th graders will learn 7th-grade standards).
Reveal Math McGraw Hill Reveal Math Student Edition will be your primary textbook, guiding you through the mathematical concepts for each lesson. McGraw Hill Reveal Math online platform: is web a-based resource provides module lessons, interactive activities, additional practice problems, and video tutorials that align with each lesson.
ALEKS We'll also be using AL,EKS, an adaptive learning platform by McGraw Hill. This program personalizes the learning experience, and we will use it strategically throughout the year:
Semester 1: ALEKS will focus on reinforcing your prior year's learning, providing a strong foundation for the advanced curriculum you'll explore in class. You'll have dedicated class time to work on ALEKS, aiming to complete your grade-level "pie" by the end of the semester. These are the same standards you'll be tested on by state assessments.
Semester 2: ALEKS will shift gears and focus on the current standards you're being taught in class (one year advanced). This will provide ongoing reinforcement throughout the year to solidify your understanding of the advanced curriculum.
Required Daily Materials To prepare for class, please come with the following materials every day:
- Reveal Student Workbook
- Composition book (math notes)
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Red Pen
- Whiteboard Marker & Eraser
Grading Policy Grades will be updated weekly in PowerSchool Parent. Please check PowerSchool regularly to stay informed of your student's progress.
Grading Scale Grade Breakdown
A 89.5% - 100% Assessments (Quizzes and module tests): 70%
B: 79.5% - 89.49% Classwork (ALEKS, Khan Academy, Spiral Review) 20%
C: 69.5% - 79.49% Homework: 10%
D: 59.5% - 69.49%
F: 0% - 59.49%
Assessments
Quizzes: There will be two quizzes each module to test your understanding as you go. Each quiz is made up of questions that closely mirror the questions on the module test. Quizzes are eligible for quiz corrections to earn 50% credit back. All quiz corrections are due by the following assessment (e.g., Quiz A corrections are due by Quiz B; Quiz B corrections are due by the module test).
Practice Test: This "practice run" mimics the test but with different questions. Take it seriously, grade your practice work, and use the online key (found in Google Classroom) to learn from mistakes before taking the test.
Module Review: The module review will be assigned as homework to help you further your understanding with a comprehensive review.
Module Test: This final test covers the entire module. There are no retakes or corrections allowed.
Classwork In class, we'll work together to build a strong foundation in math using both online and print formats. Here's what you can expect to see as part of your classwork:
ALEKS: We'll use ALEKS in class for targeted lesson practice as well as using the adaptive learning feature to master 6th and 7th-grade standards. ALEKS is a great at home resource to continue your math growth.
In-Class Assignments: (these will be started in class and can be completed at home if more time is needed)
Reveal Curriculum Spiral Review: To solidify your learning and keep those important earlier skills sharp, we'll regularly integrate "spiral review" problems throughout the module. Each lesson comes with one spiral review assignment.
Handouts: Keep an eye out for handouts (check with your teacher for where you can locate these!) that might include additional practice problems, graphic organizers, or key concepts to remember.
Notes: We will take notes in class for you to keep and use as a helpful reference.
Khan Academy: We will use Khan Academy as an additional resource to help address any prior knowledge, current concept practice, and/or to help prepare for grade-level state testing.
Homework Homework is an essential part of solidifying your understanding of the math concepts we cover in class. You'll typically receive homework assignments daily, designed to be completed in your workbook or on handouts provided in class. These assignments will reinforce the concepts we learned that day and give you a chance to practice applying them independently. Homework is expected to be complete with all necessary work to solve shown.
Absent and Late Work Policy Meeting deadlines is an important part of being successful in math class and life! This policy is in place to encourage you to turn in assignments on time and take responsibility for your learning.
Absent? Check the class website's "Week at a Glance" page or Google Classroom for any missed assignments or classwork. Tests/quizzes will be made on the day of your return. Absent work can also be completed within the number of days of your absence for full credit. For example, if you were absent for 3 days, you will be given three days upon your return to submit for full credit.
Late work: One Day Grace Period: If you miss the deadline, you can still submit your work within one day of the due date for 50% credit.
Technology Policies Technology is a powerful tool for learning math, but it's important to use it responsibly. This policy outlines the expectations for using technology in our classroom:
Academics Only: Websites not directly related to classwork or appropriate academics are not to be accessed. This includes social media, games, or other non-academic sites.
Policy Enforcement: Students are reminded of the policies each day before they begin work on technology. Students will receive a technology infraction MIR if they access websites outside appropriate academics.
